Coastal Demographics
Long before the settlement of European pioneers, Native American tribes lived, fished and worked the land along the Oregon Coast. While they did not live a true agrarian lifestyle, they used early farming techniques to increase yield and inhibit pests and weeds. Europeans arrived in the 1800's, settling along Oregon's coast during the 1850's. Early farmers were mostly subsistence but found a market for their goods during the California Gold Rushes. During the 19th and 20th centuries resource based industries such as timber and fishing dominated the local agriculture economies.
Recent population data for the Oregon Coast show a continuing trend of growth from migration. Most coastal counties have higher mortality rates than birth rates and rely on in-migrations to maintain populations. The coastal population is on the whole also aging as young people leave the rural areas for economic and educational opportunities and the growing sector of retirees flock to the coast for its slower pace of life and recreation options.
Shifting demographics has led to a change in industry importance. Growing service industries such as hospitality and tourism have much larger shares of total income. Click the Economy link on the left for more information on agriculture and coastal economies.
The agricultural industry is still primarily a family affair. Farms are still multi-generational with many farmers able to trace their land cultivation roots back many generations to ancestors that held original homesteading claims. Many of the cooperative owners of the Tillamook County Creamery Association had ancestors who started the original association over a century ago.
